Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these treatments should be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
