Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
