A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
